202

I had not seen my friend Alon for a very long time, and I finally managed to arrange brunch with him, and as he has a new girlfriend he took her along to our brunch. He suggested we go to 202 on Westbourne grove, as he lives quite close and I had been to this restaurant, but a very long time ago, so I was keen to visit it again.

202 is located in Notting Hill and named after the street number where it is situated and it is part a brunch restaurant and part a Nicole Farhi clothing/ art shop and in the basement you have a wide choice of very trendy Nicole Farhi clothes that you can buy and it feels super cool to go there and be in this type of environment, which feels a bit more interesting than your average brunch restaurant. Don’t be surprised if people disappear for a very long time when they go to the bathroom, as the bathroom is located on the basement floor, right in the centre of all the lovely clothes. On the ground floor, where you have your brunch there is a collection of books and home ware.

We arrived at 11.30 and were given the brunch menu (served until 12pm, after this time there is a more extensive lunch menu) which was fairly standard with all the usual things from sweet to savoury you would expect to find in a brunch restaurant. I ordered “Sweet potato, pepper, chorizo and pancetta hash with sunny side up egg”, and I thought it was ok , but not great, as the chorizo did not feel soft enough, it was hard and did not feel like great chorizo, and just the taste was a bit too sweet for me. Alon ordered “Scrambled eggs on toast with smoked salmon” and his eggs came in a very bright yellow colour which seemed a bit artificial, but he seemed to enjoy it. His girlfriend had the muesli with yoghurt and topped with fresh berries, and her two friends that joined us for brunch ordered “Buttermilk & ricotta pancakes with fruit compote and crème fraiche” and “French toast with bacon and maple syrup” and it looked like it had very fatty bacon which you can also see in the pictures and all the people finished their food and seemed to think it was good.

I like 202 more for the slightly funky atmosphere, the clothes and all the different house ware items that you can look at, whilst you have your brunch, than for the brunch food itself, as I think there are so many good brunch restaurants in London these days whilst a few years ago 202 would really stand out as a place to go to, these days there are many very similar brunch restaurants, but the whole vibe there with the clothing shop is very cool.
