Apero

Apero means an “aperatif” and is an alcoholic drink served before a meal and it is also a Mediterranean restaurant in the basement of the Ampersand Hotel next to South Kensington tube station. I have to say I did not really try their Mediterranean food as I went there for brunch with my girlfriends and the dishes there looked like typical brunch dishes, nothing more Mediterranean. I am not really sure how having a Mediterranean dinner would work there as the atmosphere and décor in Apero is casual, with wooden chairs, bricks and tiles, and it looks like your typical brunch restaurant. The main chef is Chris Golding.

I had two dishes from the menu, the “Spring tomato salad” as well as the “Avocado on grilled sourdough with coriander & lime”. The tomato salad was average, it had only cherry tomatoes but the mustard dressing was nice. The avocado with the toast was a super plain dish and strange to have this on its own on the menu. I did feel like I had had a super healthy lunch though with only tomatoes, avocado and a piece of toast. Agnese had the “Turkish style poached eggs, yoghurt & chilli”, and I have to say this did not look too appetizing, and a similar dish in Providores Tapa Room looks much more appealing. Agnese also could not finish this as she said it was too spicy. Lasma had the “Ham & Cheese omelette” with a side of field mushrooms, and she also did not finish this dish as she said the omelette had too much cheese. Katrina had the “Brioche French toast, bacon & maple syrup” which I also tasted and it was a good dish, but think there was too much thick toast and not enough bacon and overall a good not a great attempt at this dish.

I had a good not a great brunch there and none of the dishes really impressed me. It was good, just nothing memorable.
