Bun Bo Nam Bo

Bun Bo Nam Bo is another “restaurant” that my guidebook recommended and it said that Bun Bo (rice vermicelli with beef) was a great thing to try in Hanoi, one of the local “fares” and it recommended Bun Bo Nam Bo for an amazing rice vermicelli and beef dish. As we were walking through Hanoi sightseeing, we decided to stop here for lunch as this place was on the way.

Bun Bo Nam Bo is another one of those small grubby local eating places (not sure you can call this a restaurant) and when you walk in, on the left hand side you can see the “chef” preparing the dish (this restaurant like many of these other small eateries only serves 1 dish – this Bun Bo) and as you walk in, you realize the restaurant is actually quite big stretching back quite far, which is unusual as most of the Vietnamese eateries are tiny. It usually is crowded, but when we went there it was only half full, and there is rubbish all over the floor and the tables are messy and have chopsticks, napkins, sauces, and other things scattered on them. The waitresses don’t speak English and I could not order sparkling water or diet Coke as they simply did not understand me, and in the end had to settle for a local Hanoi beer to drink.

We were seated almost at the back of the room and ordered 2 dishes of Bun Bo which had fresh cold rice noodles, topped with crisp fried garlic, bean sprouts, peanuts, basil and thin slices of hot beef that have been marinated in garlic then fried in a wok, lettuce and a delicious sauce (like a light fish sauce with something) at the bottom of the bowl. The dish costs VND 55,000 (£1.65) and it was absolutely delicious, I loved it and it was one of the best things I ate in Vietnam. When you ate the dish you felt a mixture of different temperatures, flavours, and I truly do recommend this if you are ever in Hanoi, and I do think this is one of the best value for money meals I have ever had. My boyfriend thought this was the most delicious thing he had out of all the street food we tried in Hanoi.
