Canonbury, The

The Canonbury is a pub in Islington which has a large garden area, so a lot of families with children come here on a weekend with their children for brunch and lunch. My boyfriend and I met up with such a couple that has 2 kids and had brunch here. The day was sunny and warm and it was a pleasure to sit outside in their large and nice outside space and drink a slightly alcoholic drink. The food however I thought was not amazing and most pubs do better food, so I would not make this a lunch destination, but if you are here in the garden enjoying the good weather, you could have lunch.

I ordered “Whitebait with lemon aioli” to start with, and I did not like it at all. It did not taste of anything, there was quite a lot of batter and the aioli also was not amazing, a very poor whitebait dish. My boyfriend ordered “Grilled halloumi salad with roasted Mediterranean vegetables” and it was just so simple and without any thought going into it, just mixed Mediterranean vegetables topped with halloumi. Our friend Jacob’s “Buffalo mozzarella, plum tomato & fresh basil pesto salad” was not more inventive and just had pieces of average cut tomatoes and mozzarella on a bed of rucolla salad topped with some basil sauce. I could have created a much more beautiful tomato and mozzarella dish and definitely better presented. Shan Shan had a “Chicken liver parfait, toasted brioche with apricot chutney” which you can also see in the pictures.

The main courses were slightly but not massively better. I went for the “ Canonbury’s mighty 12oz burger with bacon & cheese” and you could choose what sort of potatoes/ fries to have with it and I chose chunky fries. I thought the burger was very average and it was one of the few burgers in my life that I have not been tempted to finish. I thought the chunky fries were nice though. Jacob chose the same burger but with fries which you can also see in the pictures. My boyfriend went for “Monkfish, butterfly prawn & chorizo brochettes, long grain & wild rice”, which I thought was ok, although the chorizo seemed a bit dry, but overall this was ok. Shan Shan ordered “Fresh crab linguini with cherry tomatoes, chilli & garlic oil” which you can also see in the pictures, and which did not seem to have a lot of crab, but apart from that looked ok.

As I said I would not make the Canonbury a meal destination, I would make it “a drink in the nice outside area when the weather is sunny” type of destination.
