Fazenda

The story of this restaurant began 20 years ago when 2 friends decided to establish a bakery. Then in 2010 they also opened their first restaurant called Fazenda and now the restaurant has 2 branches in Riga (I went to Baznicas street restaurant) as well as a restaurant in the city Sigulda. The décor in the restaurant was very interesting, it reminded me of a wealthy Latvian house in the 1930s, the restaurant had bright walls, every table had colourful tablecloths and the restaurant had various old, interesting elements to look at.

The menu was long and besides their home baked bread you could choose from breakfast, late breakfast dishes, soups, salads, main courses, pasta and even wok dishes. We came here on Monday (bank holiday) for a late breakfast so a lot of us chose dishes from the breakfast menu. My fiancé ordered toasted bread with smoked salmon, avocado and tomatoes as well as soft boiled eggs. I ordered a sorrel soup with pork, topped with a boiled egg, which was one of their seasonal special dishes. Olga ordered a salad with goats cheese, beetroot marinated in balsamic vinegar and olive bread breadcrumbs. Arturs went for a side of toasted bread with guacamole as well as a salad with brie cheese, caramelised onions and avocado. The prices are not expensive and dishes are EUR5 on average.

I liked the bread they brought us before our meal which included a dark bread made out of various grains and a tasty green butter. I did really like my sorrel soup, although I thought the portion was quite small, and I wish it was bigger, but it was a good version of this traditional soup. Both toasted breads that Arturs and my fiancé ordered were good, the avocado puree pleasant, although I would have added more lemon and salt to it, if I had made it. Salmon and bread works and it was a nice snack. The boiled eggs were nicely presented with a colourful napkin and some salad. Olga’s and Arturs’ dishes also looked appetizing, especially the huge chunks of cheese in Arturs salad and the beetroot in Olga’s salad.

I don’t feel like I had enough food to form a firm opinion about Fazenda as most of the dishes we had were starter/ salad type of dishes, but so far I like the food Fazenda serves.
