Modern Pantry

I have been to Modern Pantry once before for dinner, a few years ago, but I was googling best places in London for brunch and it came up so I suggested we go there with my friends Lasma and Luke for brunch.

Modern Pantry is located in Clerkenwell, in St John’s Square, which is a great little square and it was so nice to sit outside in this little square in the sun, on the very warm day which we had. Modern Pantry tries to “please and excite the palete by fusing everyday cooking with modern ingredients” which they did achieve during this brunch. I found the menu very exciting. It had cool alcoholic cocktails (like the passion fruit Bellini Lasma was drinking), exciting looking mixed juices and smoothies, pastries, yoghurt and granola type of breakfast, cooked breakfast and also lunch dishes. We all chose to have something from their cooked breakfast selection and here once again I was very excited about their dishes as a lot of them had chilli, coriander and sort of Asian influence in typical egg dishes, the sort of fusion that gets me very excited.

My boyfriend ordered two poached eggs (you could also have fried or scrambled) with smoked streaky bacon, slow roast tomatoes and buttered mushrooms (£8.80). Lasma also had poached eggs but chose to have them with pan fried haloumi, slow roast tomatoes and wilted spinach (£8.80). You could have these with normal or gluten free toast and both chose to have their meals with the gluten free toast. I thought the dishes looked good (although Luke did say it seemed like the poached eggs had been made with cling film). I thought it was a good plate of food. Luke and I went for, what the waitress said was their signature dish, sugar cured New Caledonian prawn omelette, green chilli, spring onion, coriander, smoked chilli sambal and toast (I had gluten free toast and Luke had normal toast). I loved the omelette, thought the prawns were delicious (Luke thought they could have been a bit undercooked), and enjoyed having spring onions and chilli and coriander and loved eating the omelette with chilli sambal, something I had a lot when in Malaysia and which I fell in love with.

I had a very enjoyable lunch here (helped by the warm weather and the fact we were sitting outside) and this is a very pleasant place for lunch. Note however the service could have been a bit better. It was very busy when we came here which meant we waited a long time for our food to arrive and in general to get the waiters attention.
