Pizza East

Pizza East is owned by the same people that own the famous Shoreditch house, Soho house, Electric Cinema etc and at the time of writing there are three branches of Pizza East, in Shoreditch, Notting Hill and Kentish Town. I think the Pizza East in Shoreditch, on the ground floor of the same building as Shoreditch house, where I went to on a Saturday night, is much cooler than the one in Notting Hill, so if you want to try it out make sure you go to the Shoreditch one. The Shoreditch Pizza East is probably one of the biggest restaurants you will see in London, and it has a superb New York cool vibe about it. It is a perfect place for a cool pizza dinner with your friends before some fun in Shoreditch (we saw many tables like that on Saturday when we went there). The Notting Hill branch seems a bit more casual, less going out, and much smaller, but still offers you the same delicious pizza, and as unfortunately I have not been to the Kentish Town one I cant really comment.

The pizzas at Pizza East have interesting toppings and even though I personally would not put these toppings together or in some instances enjoy them, they are creative and interesting. The menu also features names like scamorza (which apparently is Italian cow's milk choose, and I only know that as I googled), finocchiona (a variation on regular Tuscan salami that is flavoured with fennel seeds, again had to google), soppressata (apparently the most well known Italian salami) - so if you (like me) can't speak fluent Italian, when you see the menu you could be a bit puzzled and have to spend some time with the waitress when she explains all these different things. You go to Pizza East for pizza, but they also have some very interesting sides and dishes. You can also have 15 different antipasti (some fried, some baked, some just served cold), or the wood oven dishes like lasagne, but unfortunately I did not try any of these, so can’t comment. They also have a nice selection of salads, and I have had the butter lettuce, avocado, vinaigrette one which was delicious as well as the heritage tomatoes, basil, salad which was also excellent and a great addition to the pizza.

My boyfriend chose one of these pizzas with a creative topping that I had not seen anywhere else, which had spicy sausage, mozzarella, tenderstem broccoli, which I personally did not like. I chose the more traditional topping pizza with salami, tomato, mozzarella, chilli flakes which was delicious, but unfortunately not as good as a Pizza Express American Hot which I absolutely love and which is quite similar but comes slightly cheaper.

The pizzas are good, the antipasti and sides I think are better and above what you get in other restaurants but the main thing about this restaurant is the cool atmosphere, also perfect for a first date if you want something loud and buzzing.
