I don’t always agree with what other food critics write, but I always read what they say, as I love eating food, watching food programs, cooking food and reading reviews about food. In one such review mentioning best 2014 restaurants, I noticed that the Colony Grill Room was mentioned. I had never heard of this place, which was strange as it was so close to where I live, less than 5 minutes away from Selfridges. So on one Saturday, my boyfriend and I decided to go there for lunch.

The Colony Grill Room is located in the Beaumont hotel, which I did not know about before, but which looks very pretty. I was a bit surprised about how much I liked the room where the Colony Grill Room was located. The hotel is sort of hidden from the main streets but when you walk into the Colony Grill Room, the room is grand and beautiful and it is buzzing and has so many people there. It is amazing to find something so hidden yet so much fun.

The Lockhart has been around in Marylebone (Seymour Place) serving US southern food for close to 2 years now but it started getting much more attention a few months ago when they changed their chef. The new chef is the Mississippi born Brad McDonald, who has worked in some great restaurants around the world. My friends Love and Katrina had booked a table for brunch so I went there on a Sunday. The menu during dinner is different and wider and showcases their true skill and I am yet to experience this, which I really want to, although my boyfriend who has had dinner here says the food is great.

Jackson & Rye is a US style breakfast, brunch and all day food restaurant in Soho. It looks very welcoming from the outside with large windows, and when you walk in, it has that sort of NY feel. I wanted to come here for brunch with my friend Una on a Saturday but a week before we decided to go all the brunch slots were already fully booked so we settled for breakfast at 10am. So if you want to go there for brunch, just like with the popular Riding House Café, you have to book in advance.

One of my colleagues Vatchy was telling me that I have to go to Steam & Rye, a new place (opened in November 2013) in the city of London where you could have American food and which later operated as a club. He said it was quite interesting as most of these dinner/ clubbing combined restaurants are located in Mayfair and this would be the first of this sort in the city. This and the fact that Kelly Brook seems to be involved with this place (as well as the man behind Mahiki and Whisky Mist) attracted my attention and so next time when I was organizing a dinner with my female friends I suggested this place.

Christopher’s is a restaurant and a martini bar in Covent Garden. It is located on Wellington street, and it is interesting to find this restaurant in the very noisy Covent Garden, as it feels much more upscale than the surrounding Covent Garden, mainly touristy, restaurants, especially as it is located in a Grade II listed building with an interesting past. When you walk into the building, on your right there is a martini bar but for the main dining area you need to head upstairs on a round staircase with a wonderful lamp hanging on top of the staircase which you can see in a picture below. Christopher’s opened in 1991, but has recently had a redecoration and now has an interesting yellow and grey décor, which is supposed to remind you of a Modern American era, as Christopher’s is an American restaurant.

I have an American Express credit card and in January as a loyalty thing they sent me a voucher with £50 off if I went to eat in the American steak restaurant The Palm. The offer was valid until the 30th of April, and I totally forgot about it until the 29th of April, Monday, and as my boyfriend and I had nothing planned for the next day we booked a table for 7pm in The Palm for dinner to spend our dining card

I am a huge fan of the Frommers travel guides and whenever I go to a new city, I always buy the Frommers guide and follow many of their suggestions. My Boston Frommers guide recommended me to visit Hammersley’s Bistro as according to them, this was one of the best dining experiences in Boston, as Hammersley’s Bistro is both a neighbourhood restaurant and a special occasion restaurant, and the chef and TV personality Julia Child encouraged Gordon and Fiona Hamersley to open Hammersley’s Bistro

I went to Boston as my boyfriend was running the Boston marathon and a few months before I had already found all the restaurants I wanted to visit in Boston and had booked them, with the exception of Neptune Oyster, that you could not book, but I was very keen to try. I love the US seafood restaurants that offer anything from jumbo prawns to chowders, and I was researching these before my trip and Neptune Oyster seemed to be one of the best if not the best in Boston.

We were travelling through Atlanta on our holiday and were supposed to meet my boyfriend’s colleague for lunch and he suggested we go to the Optimist as it had been getting great reviews recently. We went to the Optimist which is located somewhat outside of the center of Atlanta in a separate building, something like an abandoned warehouse and there was a huge writing in blue letters “The Optimist” on the outside of the building guiding you to the restaurant. The Optimist calls itself a “fish camp and an oyster bar”, and seafood is very much their specialty as they offer oysters from both east and west coast (the west coast ones are smaller and meatier apparently as the waitress explained), and also shrimps, lobster, and other type of seafood and fish in various different dishes. The inside of the restaurant feels like an American brasserie.

This is the place where the locals go for some sweet Southern cooking for over 19 years since this place first opened. South City Kitchen has 2 branches and I went to the one located in Midtown Atlanta in a converted two-story house and in the main dining area on one side is the kitchen so you can watch the chefs create the Southern dishes. One of the reviews of this place said that this is where well dressed professionals go to meet and greet and when we started chatting to the table that was sitting next to us it turned out to be true, as people from that table had been coming there for years to meet their friends. To start we ordered some gem lettuce served with pecan nuts, which turned out to be not really gem lettuce, but spinach with some darker salad leaves, which I found quite funny.
