Brunch

Location:

Tom's Kitchen
11 Westferry Circus, E14 4HD
London

This is a very disappointing restaurant. There are now three Tom’s Kitchen restaurants, one in Chelsea (the original restaurant which opened in 2006), one in Somerset House, and now one in Canary Wharf, which opened a few weeks ago, and which I visited as it is located close to my work. Tom’s Kitchen is a modern British brasserie serving comfort food, and tries to use UK-based suppliers wherever possible, and uses sustainable fish and they try to avoid endangered fish like tuna. The owner of these places is the famous chef Tom Aiken.

I had not seen my friend Alon for a very long time, and I finally managed to arrange brunch with him, and as he has a new girlfriend he took her along to our brunch. He suggested we go to 202 on Westbourne grove, as he lives quite close and I had been to this restaurant, but a very long time ago, so I was keen to visit it again.

Apero

Apero means an “aperatif” and is an alcoholic drink served before a meal and it is also a Mediterranean restaurant in the basement of the Ampersand Hotel next to South Kensington tube station. I have to say I did not really try their Mediterranean food as I went there for brunch with my girlfriends and the dishes there looked like typical brunch dishes, nothing more Mediterranean. I am not really sure how having a Mediterranean dinner would work there as the atmosphere and décor in Apero is casual, with wooden chairs, bricks and tiles, and it looks like your typical brunch restaurant. The main chef is Chris Golding.

Riding House Café

Riding House Café is a wonderful brunch restaurant. Located north of Oxford Circus on the corner of Riding House street and Great Thichfield Street it offers wonderful classic breakfast dishes before 12 and after 12 serves lunch specialties (at lunch you can chose smaller plates and share them or a bigger plate just for yourself).

I went to Riding House Café for brunch/ breakfast, and we had a table booked for 5 of us for 10.45, as there was no later table. This place is very popular and you can either book a table (half of the tables there they let you book), but you need to book a lot in advance as these tables get taken very quickly or you can just turn up and try to occupy one of the walk-in tables but chances are you will have to wait around 1h for them.

Balthazar

This has been the most anticipated opening of the whole year. For 2 years now I have been reading how the New Yorks’s famous Balthazar will be opening in London, and finally a few months ago it finally happened and Balthazar is now located in Covent Garden. The London born Keith McNally is behind Balthazar, and he has opened up many restaurants in New York, but arguably Balthazar which he opened in 1996 in New York is his most famous one, hence everyone has been so excited about this British man opening the same restaurant in London. The design of Balthazar is the same in London as it is in New York, and it feels a bit like a very crowded brasserie full of mirrors and lights. Note I did think it was very crowded and noisy and there is not a lot of space in between the tables and by the tables so they definitely have tried to get as many tables there as they could. I did like the design overall though and Balthazar had a pleasant expensive brasserie feel to it.

There is one thing that I would never do when eating in Latvian restaurants - book a table, as you could always just turn up and there will be space for you, that is before Koya came along. Koya is a restaurant that looks bizarre from the outside, like a black painted shed, but it is these days the coolest place in Riga where you always have to book a table especially if you want to go there for brunch on a weekend. Brunch never used to be very popular in Latvia and this is a trend that has very slowly been introduced to Riga and brunch at Koya is what the locals love these days.

Electric House

Electric House is located in Notting Hill and part of the same private members’ club chain as Shoreditch House which I have already reviewed (gave it MMMm). The Electric House has a cinema, a bar, a smoking terrace, a library and a restaurant located on the 2nd floor which is where I went. There is also Electric Diner, another venue where you can have food and which is owned by the same team, but there you can go even if you are not a member, but for the restaurant in Electric House, just like with Shoreditch house if you want to go there you will need to find a nice member to take you there.

Mudam Le Café

Mudam Café is located within the Mudam (Musée d’Art Moderne) museum in Luxembourg, which as the name very clearly states is the modern art museum in Luxembourg. I was there with my girlfriends and we wanted to see the exhibitions going on there at the time, and so also decided to get some brunch before the art tour.

Mudam Café was designed by the French designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec and when you enter the café it feels extremely spacious with very high ceilings and it is very light. We were sitting on one side of the dining room in comfortable chairs and sofas although you can also sit by large communal wooden tables in the middle of the room. I also very much liked the large trees that were in the Café, which made the place look very pleasant and calm. Also on Wednesdays there are live concerts free of charge in the Mudam Café.

The Providores and Tapa Room

Providores Tapa Room is known for its good brunch on weekends which means people are queuing outside even in the winter cold for a long time to go there. Providores opened in 2001 and is located on Marylebone High Street and the restaurant has a downstairs area which is very cosy, casual and relaxed called the Tapa Room where you can’t book and which generates the queues to get a table, or an upstairs dining area called just “Providores” which you can book but the atmosphere there is not as great as it is more formal. As I said, this place is very popular for brunch on a weekend (at other times walk ins are much easier) and if you want to go there during a weekend brunch I either advise you to do it at 11 or at 2 when the big rush of the people has died down and you will need to wait less. Also don’t think this place has anything to do with Spain, the Tapa room takes its name not from the Spanish tapas but from the huge, traditional Rarotongan Tapa cloth that hangs on the wall.

Shoreditch House

I went to Shoreditch house with a big group of people for a Saturday brunch. One of my friends Katrina is a member and she decided to organize a brunch for a few of us and we all arrived to Shoreditch house on a Saturday for 12.00 brunch. Note Shoreditch house is a private members club and so if you want to go there for a meal like I did you will need to find a member friend that is nice enough to invite you. Shoreditch House is located in Shoreditch and is a large building that also has a spa, a hotel with rooms for members. On the 6th floor they have an outdoor pool area where you can go in the summer and relax and eat but the rest of the time the 5th floor, where there is a dining room, a pool table room with a casual sit down area and also another relaxed room full of big sofas and fireplaces, is the place where people usually go. We had our brunch in the dining area on the 5th floor, which has long communal tables and the 8 of us were sitting on one side of it.
