When I googled best restaurants in Edinburgh, Wedgwood came up, so naturally I was keen to come here (Wedgwood has just been awarded Restaurant of the Year 2013 by Scottish Licensed Trade News for the third time). The main chef and owner of Wedgwood is Paul Wedgwood who together with Lisa Channon wanted to create a restaurant that would offer their “Perfect Night Out”, which means fine dining without the pretentiousness. This also means tables here are not “turned” and you can stay here as long as you want to and enjoy your meal as long as you want, which to me (a Londoner that is often thrown out of restaurants after having my 2h slot) sounds wonderful. As I came here for a quick lunch that lasted only an hour, I did not experience this though.

La Kanna

La Kanna is a very pleasant café in Riga that not only serves good coffee and drinks but also reasonably priced European/ International type of food. I am usually in Riga on weekends and La Kanna attracted my attention as it serves a very good brunch on Saturdays and Sundays up until 15.00 (from 10am).  Finding a brunch place two years ago in Riga was very hard, but recently a lot of restaurants have started offering brunch, which is a very popular meal abroad and now also in Riga. We don’t even have a Latvian name for this and also call it brunch (the English word), which shows how recent this trend is and that we have borrowed this word.

The next available table at Chiltern Firehouse is now in July, this is how popular it has become in just a few months after opening. I first found out about this place from my friend Paul who knew about this place even before it had opened and came to the opening night and rubbed shoulders with celebrities. I went to Chiltern Firehouse fairly soon after the opening before a series of food critics and bloggers had managed to write about this place hence I managed to get a table a few days before I came here. I even changed the number of people that were coming here from 2 to 3 to 4 and they nicely accommodated me every time I requested a change.

One Canada Square is a new European/ International food restaurant in Canary Wharf Canada Square in the iconic Canary Wharf building with the flashing light at the top that you see flashing when you fly over London. It was set up by Tom and Ed Martin (ETM Group) who are also behind the very famous The Botanist restaurant on Sloane Square (as well as some other gastropubs around London like The Well, The Jugged Hare, The Cadogan Arms). One Canada Square has a 30-cover bar and 100-cover restaurant (as well as a mezzanine level where my friend Anda had her team drinks recently) and it is open from 7am for breakfast and also serves lunch, dinner and post work cocktails. The interior sort of reminded me of Goodmans. There are leather chairs and that sort of a city vibe and there are beautiful paintings in sort of “autumn colours” on the walls. The interior was done by David Collins Studio which has designed the interior inspired by the 1920a.

Hoi Polloi

Hoi Polloi is a sort of British/ European, but very trendy, restaurant in the American Ace Hotel in Shoreditch (the hotel’s first venture outside of the US). Ace Hotel is located on Shoreditch High Street and the entrance to Hoi Polloi restaurant is through a flower shop, Hattie Fox's That Flower Shop, which is unusual, cool and matches the Shoreditch vibe. Hoi Polloi actually is an expression from Greek that means “the many” or “the majority”, and in English it means the working class, the masses or common people. Pablo Flack and David Waddington are the owners and they already have two other trendy restaurants Bistrotheque and Shrimpy's, and a few other pop-ups.

W Cafe is a very casual place, with a tempting cake, macaroon, cupcakes and pastry counter and comfortable pink and yellow bright chairs where you can slouch and enjoy some drinks and light bites.

My friend Amala and I were catching up for breakfast and needed a restaurant. Amala wanted something a bit classy and after I sent him some suggestions he chose Dean Street Townhouse from the options I had given him. As I was booking a restaurant on a Saturday for a breakfast at 11.00 on Sunday, it was quite hard to book anything, and Dean Street Townhouse was full. I therefore decided to go for something similar and chose Plum + Spilt Milk.

I really wanted to go to Grain Store restaurant as during a recent lunch I had sat next to a man who had been there and he said how amazing it was and how this restaurant focused on vegetables and meat and fish were a side to the meal, not the main portion of the mea. It sounded very interesting, and I also found out that the main chef was Bruno Loubet (who owns the restaurant together with the Zetter Group's Michael Benyan and Mark Sainsbury), and I had been to one of his other restaurants, Bistrot Bruno Loubet (owned by the same people), so I booked Grain Store for dinner for a Friday evening.

You & Me Bar is a restaurant in the centre of Warsaw. Ed and I were visiting Warsaw and fancied some food and our driver dropped us off on Żurawia street that had many restaurants and he told us we could chose to have lunch in the one we liked the look of the most and we chose the You & Me Bar, as it had the most European food and it seemed quite casual and nice.

I was in Poland and wanted to go for a nice dinner. My wonderful Polish colleague Jarek suggested I go to Belvedere restaurant for dinner. At first I thought the name Belvedere was something to do with the vodka brand Belvedere, but oh no! I was so wrong! Belvedere is a presidential castle in Poland and the vodka and this restaurant (which is located next to it) are both named after it, as I was later told.
