I went to Greenhouse with Neil, to reward him for consistently being in the top 3 of my quiz winners (I send this quiz out at work every morning), as well as Ed, who used to be one of the top performers in the quiz before he dropped out to focus more on work (!!!!). Greenhouse is located on Hay’s Mews in Mayfair, and I found it a bit hard to find it at first, as it was located at the end of the street that only has residential buildings and some noisy construction work, but once you pass the construction site, the view is beautiful, as you need to walk down a tree-lined pathway to reach The Greenhouse, and it almost feels like you are entering an oasis of calm.

Biscuit

Biscuit is an Italian restaurant in Riga, run by chef Mikhail Markin who apparently was especially invited from Moscow torun this restaurant, and my friend Dacite suggested to go there for dinner, so a big group of us went there. Note even though I say this is an Italian restaurant, on their website they say their food is predominantly Italian with influences from around the world, which I do find quite amusing as in eastern Europe I have found that people think it is totally acceptable to serve different types of food in the same restaurant and the emphasis is not on the type of cuisine but rather that the dishes are popular and well executed (so a popular Italian and a popular Asian dish in the same restaurant is totally normal). Biscuit is located on a quiet street on the boarder of “quiet centre” area in Riga.

Over the last few years quite a few restaurants have opened up in Riga that offer a great view of the city or the main river that flows through it – Daugava. This is very common in other cities but in Riga it feels like only recently people have started putting that extra emphasis on the view. Ostas Skati is a restaurant located on the shore of Daugava, on the western side of the river and offers great views of the city, which is mainly located on the eastern side of the shore. If you want to appreciate how beautiful Riga is, this is the place to go to especially during the summer, when you can sit outside. I am Latvian and even I was amazed how beautiful the city looks from this angle. The other reason why a lot of Latvians like Ostas Skati is because it is considered to sell good value food, as it charges you slightly less than in other restaurants for the same things.

Hoxton Grill is located in the Hoxton Hotel in the trendy Shoreditch area. My friend Lasma had chosen this place for her birthday dinner. As it was 15 of us celebrating Lasma’s birthday we had to pre-order the food (4 different starters, 4 different mains and 4 different deserts) and all the food was brought to us in big plates to share.

The Hoxton Grill is quite a cool place, at the entrance of the hotel/ grill you have big sofas where you can relax, read a newspaper or a book and meet your friends, perfect for Saturday and Sunday mornings. The bar is also very nice and there is an outside area with trees in the middle of the room. The main dining area looks a bit like a very upmarket American diner, but it does suit the hip vibe of the place. As there were so many of us, they could not accommodate us in the main dining area and we sat in a private room, which was further away.

I have read quite a few reviews about the new Soho restaurant "10 Greek Street", so I was very excited when my boyfriend suggested we should go there. The idea of this place is quite similar to quite a few other places in Soho, like Ducksoup, Polpo etc, when the menu is composed of small and also a few bigger plates that are meant to be shared. When I first saw the menu I thought it was less inspiring than the previously mentioned places tapas places in London, as not only the menu is smaller, it has only got 12 starters/ main courses on the menu and 8 smaller plates, it also is more traditional food (the menu feels quite English/ European even though the main chef is Australian). We decided to have a small plate of "crumbed braisedlamb, gremolata mayonnaise", which turned out to be lamp balls cooked with breadcrubs, which were very nice.

Ekeberg Restaurant

I went to Oslo with my friend Lasma to visit my friend Hans Peter and see the city. Hans Peter recommended we go for lunch to Ekeberg Restaurant, due to the view and as it was quite famous (eating there is ranked as the 9th best thing to do in Oslo by the Lonely Planet guide). The white building where the Ekeberg restaurant is located sits on a hill among the green forest and overlooks the Oslofjord, the islands and boats, as well as the city of Oslo. The building was designed by Oslovian Lars Backer and was completed in 1929, and it was said to be one of the foremost Functionalist buildings in Europe. By the end of the 1990s, the restaurant was closed, but it has re-opened recently and been redecorated and the classic features have been retained from 1929. The view from here of the Oslofjord was said to have inspired Edvard Munch in the creation of his masterpiece, The Scream

The Fat Virgin’s café is the cheapest restaurant/ cafe in the Bitter End, a place in British Virgin Islands, on the Virgin Gorda Island, as all the other restaurants are much more expensive. We went there for a late lunch as our sailing company had recommended this place and the menu is very similar to other casual eating places in the BVI and features burger, seafood and some typical West Indian dishes.

Dabbous is run by a chef Ollie Dabbous, who cooks light and modern food, with an emphasis on clean flavours and seasonal ingredients, and he wants the food to impress through it's simplicity. I initially called them about 3 weeks ago, the nearest table I could book was 4th Oct, but I managed to get to this place earlier (last Sat) as my friend Paul had seen the email I sent around to some people about having to wait 6 months and generously offered me his booking.

Grandcafe Dickys has a great name, it is located in Amsterdam, in the financial district, and it serves lovely HUGE breakfast. I had the dutch dark bread, topped with roast beef and 2 eggs with cheese. Big portion and was nice, but not the best breakfast place.
