Location:

Sola
12 Rue de l'Hôtel Colbert 75005
Paris

FR

This is such a gem of a restaurant. Sola has 1 Michelin star and serves fusion French and Japanese food for very reasonable prices (EUR50 for a lunch tasting menu which has 6 courses that could easily be served in a top Michelin star restaurant and for a price you don’t usually see in any Michelin restaurant) it is an absolutely bargain and just wonderful. The main chef is Hiroki Yashitake and he comes from south of Japan and he has worked in many French restaurants around the world before starting in Sola in December 2010 at the age of 30.  Sola is located in the 5th district close to Notre-Dame Cathedral and it is located on a side street so unless you know where to go, chances are you are not going to walk past this place.

I thought it was a bit strange that Gordon Ramsay had a restaurant in France, in Versailles, as he is so associated with UK, and I did not really know he had other restaurants outside of UK, but I was keen to try Gordon Ramsay au Trianon as it had 2 Michelin stars and I was ready to give Gordon Ramsay another chance after visiting Gordon Ramsay at Claridges which I did not like at all. Gordon Ramsay au Trianon is located in Versailles, about 30 minutes drive from Paris centre and is located in the beautiful Trianon Palace Waldorf Astoria hotel. The restaurant serves French cuisine like most Gordon Ramsay restaurants and is modelled on Ramsay’s 3 Michelin starred restaurant in London. The dining room and the restaurant (as well as the hotel) are very grand with high ceilings, big and comfortable chairs and very spaced out tables to give each table privacy.

I had never been to any of Gordon Ramsey restaurants before despite loving food and reviewing restaurants for many months now, so it was kind of overdue for me and I was very excited to go there (funnily enough on this week I went to 2 Gordon Ramsey restaurants so I now have had a mini overdose). I booked Gordon Ramsey at Claridges, even though this is his restaurant that probably gets less attention and praise than his other ones, but the location was good for me and I also love Claridges. I booked a table on the day (it was a Monday), which shows it is not that popular these days, but then again my table was at 18.00 which is not the most popular time for dinners.

I finally made it to the Ledbury. I have been trying to go there for a while now, ever since I read about how this restaurant was attacked during the London riots last year (story which I thought was so peculiar as this was the only restaurant attacked like this) and ever since I read that they had become the 14th best restaurant in the world (from 34 a year ago, so a big jump, highest climber in the list), and they also now have 2 Michelin stars and is supposed to be one of the best places in London (note this year the Ledbury has climbed 1 more place to become the 13th best restaurant in the world), but something always happened, and I kept moving my lunch reservation around for half a year, but I finally made it.

The Hardens guide loves Morgan M and every year without fail you can see Morgan M being listed as one of the 5 best French restaurants in London. Morgan M used to be located in Islington and now it has moved to Barbican and the building of the restaurant is painted in a lovely pale green colour, which makes Morgan M stand out when you are walking past it. Morgan M is named after Morgan Meunier the main chef and he cooks contemporary French cuisine and his philosophy is “affordable haute cuisine” with seasonal ingredients at their best.

The first time I went to Coq d’Argent a few years ago I did not really like it, but I had a much more enjoyable experience when I went there a few weeks ago, so I think this place has improved. Coq d’Argent is your typical City place, as it is located next to the Bank station and you are bound to see people you know there if you work in the City or Canary Wharf, as this is one of the obvious places to go for lunch or drinks. It is located on the top floor and in the summer this is a wonderful place to have drinks on the rooftop and overlook London (unfortunately this also seems to be a favorite suicide place by City people, as there have been many sad cases when people have jumped off the roof and killed themselves due to problems related to work). As the name suggests this place serves French food and is run by the D&D group which own a number of restaurants around London.

Aurelia

Aurelia is located in Mayfair, on a nice quiet street (Cork Street) filled with art galleries. The restaurant is named after Via Aurelia, an old Roman road that used to link Rome with Ansedonia on the Mediterranean coast and the road afterwards expanded and continued and went through France and then ended up in Spain, in Santiago de Compostela, and Aurelia serves food that is eaten in all the countries that the road went through, so Mediterranean food. As this is a restaurant owned by the same people as Le Petite Maison, Zuma, etc… it embraces the sharing culture and all the dishes are brought to the table and meant to be shared. For me this restaurant stands somewhere in between Le Petite Maison (which I love) and Banca (which is not great at all for the prices it charges), and some of the dishes are great, and some are not good.

you may know the cocktail Mimosa, which consists of champagne and a citrus based drink (usually orange juice) mixed together, but Mimosa is also a lovely restaurant in Rotterdam that serves French (with an international twist) food. The cool thing is that this place is run by 2 people (c0-owners), Mark and Aad, and how they manage to do it, is quite amazing, as one of them cooks the food and the other one is a waiter (note you may think having 1 waiter in a decent sized restaurant is punchy and even though we did have to wait quite a while to get a bottle of wine at one point, he did cope super well with everything else).

Brasserie Blanc is owned by the famous French chef Raymond Blanc, who has become one of Britain's most respected chefs and also owns Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons, a hotel-restaurant in Oxfordshire, that has two Michelin stars, and that I really want to go to at some point. Brasserie Blanc is a chain and it took over some of Chez Gerard’s location’s when it went bankrupt and I went to the branch next to St Paul’s located on Bread Street (conveniently only meters away from Gordon Ramsey’s and Jamie Oliver’s restaurants) with 4 of my good Latvian girlfriends for a catch up.

I love this place and if you have never been to Le Petite Maison you must boot it straight away. I used to say I was not a huge fan of French food, but that was before I discovered Le Petite Maison which is a southern French restaurant with dishes influenced by the cooking of Côte d’Azur and neighboring Liguria. The original La Petite Maison is located in Nice, but these days La Petite Maison has 5 branches across the world, and besides the Nice and London branches, you can also find it in Cannes, Dubai and New York. The London branch of La Petite Maison is located in Mayfair, in a side street, so unless you know it is there, you would not really come across the place easily, and I am always surprised by how many people that work nearby have never heard of this restaurant.
